The love story stars Himesh alongside former child star Hansika Motwani. Here, she is credited as Riaa.

Let's start by getting the name right.
Himesh Reshammiya's upcoming film is called Aap Ka Surroor: The Moviee: The Real Luv Story.

Bollywood Special News

Amitabh Bachchan

French perfume company Lomani launched a perfume line after Amitabh Bachchan a couple of years ago.

It is a fragrance for both men and women -- Amitabh. B Pour Homme (for men) and Amitabh. B Pour Femme (for women).

According to Lomani, they have tried to capture the essence of Amitabh Bachchan in these fragrances.

Shah Rukh Khan

As with everything Big B, can Shah Rukh Khan be far behind?

SRK's French perfume called Tiger Eyes, also comes in two scents -- one for men and one for women.

After the Big B, we now have the essence of the King Khan himself!

Watching Mallika turn Mehbooba

In life, there come moments when you goggle.

It is abject helplessness as you -- forgetting even to flounder for the right words -- lose your rationality, your articulation, heck, any sort of coherence. You stand, stare, and hope that bewildered smile on your face is acceptable.

Such a moment it was, then, when I ran into Mallika Sherawat last week. In clockwork harmony, I arrived just in time, was ushered towards a big white trailer, and told ma'am would see me now. Fab. I entered, and turned to my right to see Mme Mallika, larger than life and thrice as spectacular, disarmingly dressed in full regalia.

'Do you like it?' she asked with a big smile, as we shook hands. 'It' was Helen's exact dress from Sholay, a bright green shiny top, a flouncy skirt made up of saffron and the same green, and Ms Sherawat's distinctive body, poured through it in a way that made your head spin. Plus, a crazy retro wig, Medusa ringlets crafted compellingly together in a careful mess.

"Yurg," I believe I manfully declared, as I continued the aforementioned goggle. She smiled, sat back, mercifully pulled a robe around her, and we started to talk.

Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty is one busy woman. After dishing out a spectacular performance at IIFA last weekend, the actress is all set to launch a perfume named after her. Called S2, it is named after her initials. The fragrance -- chosen by Shilpa herself -- will have a mix of jasmine, musk and fruit. The perfume will be packaged in a box with leopard print lining.
It was rumoured that the actress wore the perfume during thepremiere of her film Life In The... Metro

Zeenat Aman

Zeenat Aman was the first Indian actor to have a perfume launched in her name. Called Zeenat, the perfume was launched by a company in Saudi Arabia.

UK just cannot get over Shilpa Shetty

From Big Brother to Broadway, the actress has won a part in everything. Now, she will have a perfume in her name.

S2, named after her initials, was launched on June 12 at the Courthouse Kempinski Hotel in London.

Other film personalities who have a perfume named after them are Amitabh Bachchan [Images], Shah Rukh Khan [Images], Lata Mangeshkar and Zeenat Aman.

Lata Mangeshkar

Lata Mangeshkar's angelic voice has a scent to match.

Lata Eau De Parfum is a product of 78 ingredients. The perfume's launch saw a bidding war of sorts starting from Rs 5,000. Later, diamond merchant and film financier Bharat Shah got it for a whopping Rs 3,05,000!

Watching Mallika turn Mehbooba

The Mehbooba o mehbooba number, which should be hitting music channels any second now, is for Himesh Reshammiya's upcoming cinematic debut, Aap Kaa Surroor: The Moviee: The Real Luv Story, the baseball-capped composer having acquired the rights to the RD Burman original, from Sholay.
Saroj Khan is choreographing the song, and Mallika's thrilled to be working with Bollywood's dancing diva. Evidently the veteran choreographer is quite a blast as she mimics the steps, and the actress is completely gung-ho about this first outing with Khan. For now, she's all dressed up and waiting to be called, and over coffee, we talk about her turning producer, and how she watches films by the bucket-load.

Everyone loves Little Miss Sunshine, but the conversation really turns a blast when bonding with the woman over one of the most overlooked films of last year, Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron's breathtaking Children Of Men. And while I agree with Mallika that Julianne Moore was wasted in the film -- any movie can always do with a bit more Julianne -- it was still a classic.

The actress sits back, discussing world cinema -- while casually, distractingly crossing and uncrossing her legs -- emphasising that she isn't a party girl. A good DVD and she's happy on a Saturday night.

The bubble bursts, and we leave the van. The sets beckon.

Rajnikanth's Special News

When Rajni became Nagma's fan

Nagma

Basha was one of Rajnikanth's biggest hits. He played a don in Mumbai in one half of the film and an autodriver in Chennai in the other half. His one-liners, especially Naan orutharam sonnal noorutharam sonna maathiri (If I say it once, it is equivalent to saying it a 100 times), is still quoted by his fans.

Rajni was paired opposite Nagma, one of the top heroines in the South at the time.

And even though the actress rarely does South movies any more -- she's busy with Bhojpuri cinema -- she says that acting with Rajni was a great experience. "He is the best actor I have acted with," she says. "He is so stylish; no one else can be as stylish as him. He has created his own niche in style. He is unique in that aspect."

She also finds him very humble. "He has no starry airs," she adds. "Being down-to-earth is good for any actor. In his case, it is very special because he is not only an actor, he is a superstar."

RajnikanthNagma recalls a time when she was on the sets with Rajni in Hyderabad. The actress, who usually busied herself with knitting or reading in between shots, was once practicing her lines animatedly. She was not aware of the people around her. Suddenly, she realised that Rajni had been observing her for a while with an amused expression. He had not disturbed her while she rehearsed.

Once he had told her that he became her fan since he saw her in the song Gopala Gopala in Kaadhalan. Kaadhalan, which was a huge hit, had Nagma opposite Prabhu Deva.

On another occasion, he told her jokingly, 'Don't look into my eyes, your eyes are so enigmatic that they distract me.'

'Rajni's strength is his humility'

Rajnikanth in Sivaji

"People listen to Rajni songs at least ten times more than other songs," says lyricist P.Vijay.

This veteran who has been writing lyrics for Tamil movies for more than a decade now, says songs from Rajnikanth films are very popular.

Vijay has composed a song for the Tamil star's upcoming release Sivaji. The song is Oru Kudai and the lyricist wrote it keeping in mind the story, character and situation.

"When we are writing for Rajni, we know the song will become more popular because he is a mass hero. It is extra important because it will reach more people," he said.

Vijay's contribution for Rajni's first film Chandramukhi was Athindom. "Rajnikanth was there when the song was being composed and I can still remember what he told us..he said 'compose a song that everyone will like. The audience must like it. Keep that in mind,'"the lyricist recalled.

Vijay recollects that Rajni never interfered with the work. "He was very appreciative and never criticised. We were very happy that he had so much confidence in us. A star of his stature could have given us advice or some inputs. But he never did that. His confidence in us made us work better," he added.

Vijay recalled meeting Rajni once during a book release function and another time when his son wanted to meet the superstar. "Rajni's strength is his humility and simplicity. We should all learn how to be humble from him. He is such a big star and yet has no ego at all," he said.

It may be mentioned that Vijay got his first break in Tamil movies in 1996 when he wrote for K Bhagyaraj's Gnanapalam.

Swami Vivekananda [1863-1902] Life

Swami Vivekananda [1863-1902] Life

Swami Vivekananda was born Narendranath Dutta, son of a well-known lawyer in Calcutta, Biswanath Dutta, and a very intelligent and pious lady, Bhuvaneswari Devi, in the year 1863. Biswanath often had scholarly discussions with his clients and friends on politics, religion and society. He would invite Narendranath to join in these discussions. Narendra, not in the embarrassed, would say whatever he thought was right, advancing also arguments, in support of his stand. Some of Biswanath's friends resented Naren's presence among them, more so because he had the audacity to talk about matters concerning adults. Biswanath, however, encouraged him. Naren would say: Point out where I'm wrong, but why should you object to my independent thinking?

Naren learnt the Epics and Puranas from his mother, who was a good story-teller. He also inherited her memory among other qualities. He, in fact, owed much to her as he used to say later. Naren was all-round. He could sing, was good at sports, had a ready wit, his range of knowledge was extensive, had a rational frame of mind and he loved to help people . He was a natural leader. He was much sought after by the people because of his various accomplishments.

Naren passed Entrance Examination from the Metropolitan Institute and F.A. and B.A. Examinations from the General Assembly's Institution (now Scottish Church College). Hastie, Principal of the College, was highly impressed by Naren's philosophical insight. It was from Hastie that he first heard of Sri Ramakrishna.

As a student of Philosophy, the question of God was very much in his mind. Was there a God ? If there was a God, what was He like ? What were man's relations with Him ? Did He create this world which was so full of anomalies ? He discussed these questions with many, but no one could give him satisfactory answers. He looked to persons who could say they had seen God, but found none. Meanwhile, Keshab Sen had become the head of the Brahmo Movement. He was a great orator and many young people, attracted by his oratory, enrolled as members of the Brahmo Samaj. Naren also did the same. For some time he was satisfied with what the Brahmo Samaj taught him, but soon he began to feel it did not quite touch the core of the matter, so far as religion was concerned. A relation of his used to advise him to visit Ramakrishna at Dakshineswar, who, he said, would be able to remove all his doubts about religion. He happened to meet Ramakrishna at the house of a neighbour, but there is nothing on record about the impression that he created on Naren's mind. He, however, invited Naren to visit him at Dakshineswar some day. As the days passed, Naren began to grow restless about the various riddles that religion presented to him. He particularly wanted to meet a person who could talk about God with the authority of personal experience. Finally, he went to Ramakrishna one day and asked him straightaway if he had seen God. He said he had, and if Naren so wished, he could even show God to him. This naturally took Naren by surprise. But he did not know what to make of it, for though his simplicity and love of God impressed Naren, his idiosyncrasies made him suspect if Ramakrishna was not a 'monomaniac'. He began to watch him from close quarters and after a long time he was left in no doubt that Ramakrishna was an extraordinary man. He was the only man he had so far met who had completely mastered himself. Then, he was also the best illustration of every religious truth he preached. Naren loved and admired Ramakrishna but never surrendered his independence of judgment. Interestingly, Ramakrishna himself did not demand it of him, or of any other of his disciples. Nevertheless, Naren gradually came to accept Ramakrishna as his master.

Ramakrishna suffered from cancer and passed away in 1886. During his illness, a group of select young men had gathered round him and began to nurse him while receiving spiritual guidance from him. Naren was the leader of this group. Ramakrishna had wanted that they take to monastic life and had symbolically given them Gerua cloth. They accordingly founded a monastery at Baranagar and began to live together, depending upon they got by begging. Sometimes they would also wander about like other monks. Naren also would sometimes go travelling. It was while he was thus travelling that he assumed the name of Swami Vivekananda.

Vivekananda travelled extensively through India, sometimes on foot. He was shocked to see the conditions of rural India-people ignorant, superstitious, half-starved, and victims of caste-tyranny. If this shocked him, the callousness of the so-called educated upper classes shocked him still more. In the course of his travels he met many princes who invited him to stay with them as their guest. He met also city-based members of the intelligentsia-lawyers, teachers, journalists and government officials. He appealed to all to do something for the masses. No one seemed to pay any heed to him-except the Maharaja of Mysore, the Maharaja of Khetri and a few young men of Madras. Swami Vivekananda impressed on everybody the need to mobilize the masses. A few educated men and women could not solve the problem of the country; the mass power had to be harnessed to the task. He wanted the masses educated. The ruler of Mysore was among the first to make primary education free within his State. This, however, was not enough in Swamiji's view. A peasant could not afford to send his children to school, for he needed help in his field. He wanted education taken to the peasant's door-step, so that the peasant's children could work and learn at the same time. It was a kind of 'non-formal' education which perhaps he visualized. His letters to the Maharaja of Mysore on the subject show how much he had given to the subject and how original he was.

Other princes, or the intelligentsia as a whole, were impressed by Swamiji's personality, but were much too engrossed with their own affairs to pay any heed to his appeals. Some of the young men of Madras, Perumal specially, dedicated himself to the ideas Swamiji propounded and his contributions to the success of his mission were significant. Swamiji could guess the reason why the so-called leaders of the society ignored him. Who was he ? A mere wandering monk. There were hundreds of such monks all over the country. Why should they pay any special attention to him ? By and large, they followed only Western thinkers and those Indians who followed the West and had had some recognition in the West by so doing. It was slave mentality, but that was what characterized the attitude of the educated Indians over most matters. It pained Swamiji to see Indians strutting about in Western clothes and imitating Western ways and manners, as if that made them really Western. Later he would call out the nation and say, 'Feel proud that you are Indians even if you're wearing a loin-cloth'. He was not opposed to learning from the West, for he knew the Western people had some great qualities and it was because of those qualities that they had become so rich and powerful. He wanted India to learn science and technology from the West and its power to organize and its practical sense, but, at the same time, retain its high moral and spiritual idealism. But the selfishness of the so-called educated people pained him more. They were happy if they could care for themselves and they gave a damn to what happened to the people. Swamiji wanted to draw their attention to the miserable condition of the masses-illiterate, always on the verge of starvation, superstitious and victims of oppression by the upper castes and the rich landlords.

As Swamiji arrived in Madras, young people gathered round him drawn by his bright and inspiring talks. They begged him to go to the USA to attend the forthcoming Parliament of Religions in Chicago to represent Hinduism. They even started raising funds for the purpose. Swamiji was first reluctant but later felt some good might come of his visit to the West, for if he could make some impression there, his people back at home, who always judged a thing good or bad according as the Western critics thought of it, would then give him a respectful hearing. That is exactly what happened : Swamiji made a tremendous impression, first in the USA and then also in England. The press paid him the highest tributes as an exponent of India's age-old values; overnight he became a great national hero in India. Suddenly it was brought home to them that there must be something in Indian thought that Western intelligentsia feel compelled to admire. They began to suspect that perhaps they were not as backward as they once thought, and in areas like religion and philosophy, in art and literature, they were perhaps more advanced than the Western people. They had always felt sorry about themselves, but, now for the first time, they awoke to the richness of their heritage. This was the starting point of the Indian renaissance one hears about. A long successful of national leaders starting from Tilak have drawn inspiration from Swami Vivekananda. They 'discovered' India-her strong and weak points-through him. 'If you want to know India, study Vivekananda', was Tagore's advice to Romain Rolland. This holds true even today, indeed no one has studied India's body and mind so thoroughly as Swamiji did.
It was Swamiji's hope that India would create a new social order and a new civilization by combining her best spiritual traditions with the latest advancements in science and technology. She would be rich both materially and spiritually. He knew affluence was not enough, man had to be human, too. He wanted India to set an example in this.

Box Office: Srinu Vaitla Takes Lion's Share

1. Dubai Seenu

Cast: Ravi Teja, Nayantara
Director: Srinu Vaitla

Theme: The film is made on comedy track with enough of action elements. Although appeared to have lengthy at some instances on a whole the film is getting good applause from audiences

Material: Comedy of MS Narayana plays vital role in the film and that made the climax light despite heavy subject background. Rest of the film is routine but not something to be shunned.

Trade Report: The openings of the film are good. The film is doing well at home and very well overseas.

Verdict: Good Openings

2. Aduvari Matalaku Arthale Verule
Cast: Venkatesh, Trisha
Director: Sri Raghava

Theme: The film is made with the elements those appeal for all family audiences. Although there is mixed response with respect to comedy track in the film, on a whole it is doing very well.

Material: Star value played very vital role in the film. The trailers those are being used for promotion are also playing big role in bringing big collections for the film.

Trade Report: The collections are very good since the beginning day. The film is doing equally well both at home and abroad.

Verdict: Hit

3. Dhee:
Cast: Vishnu, Genelia, Sri Hari
Director: Srinu Vaitla

Theme: Director Srinu Vytla is on a winning streak as his comedy is doing well even after 50 days and gifting a hit to the lead actors Vishnu and Genelia. The film is totally made on comedy platform although all the elements are equally sprinkled in it.

Material: Sri Hari's role played very vital role in the film and the screenplay is the real hero in it.

Trade Report: The collections are still satisfactory for this film. Although the title sounds to be completely 'mass', the class audiences also patronized it after the spread of mouth talk.

Verdict: Hit

4. Aata
Cast: Siddartha, Ileana
Director: VN Aditya

Theme: The film is made on similar grounds with Gudumba Shankar. But still entertainment wise, it is appealing for family audiences.

Material: Siddharth and Ileana's pairing has captured the fancy of youth in a big way. That is why the film is doing well despite poor script.

Trade Report: The openings of the film are very good. The collections are diminishing now but made enough so far.

Verdict: Above Average

5. Operation Duryodhana

Cast: Srikanth, Kalyani
Director: Posani Krishna Murali

Theme: The film is almost gone out of focus with respect to style of making. The director confused the audiences without putting focus on any subject. Only the so-called controversial Telangana issue boosted up the popularity of this film.

Material: Director failed to showcase his idea of showing present political scenario on silver screen.

Trade Report: The openings are very good due to high expectations. But immediately there is a big downfall. As soon as the onset of Telangana issue with the film, the collections started rocketing up.

Verdict: Flop

Andhra Talk: 610, 399, 415-How Many More?

The fresh talk among native Telangana people in Hyderabad is about GO 415. The announced was made freshly today and the people are waiting to read what the amendments those were made in GO 399 are. Well everything is for GO 610 that gives unique status for local Telangana citizens in Government services and education.

A few Telangana people those were picked up in random expressed their views of dejection.

"Everything is a funda. Nothing comes out finally till Congress is in power. We expect nothing big till TRS will come to power in this area", says Bikshu Yadav, a businessman.

"I hear about this 610 and 399. When this 415 has come. What's it all about? I feel nothing turns new despite new GOs are brought to light", opines an Osmania University student.

There are indeed a few who are not at all aware of this GO.

Syed Khader, a Muslim businessman at Amberpet Mosque said, "Kya Lafdaa Hai Saab. Hukumat mein koi bhi ho…gareeb gareebi mein rehta aur ameer imarat mein rehta. Iskey oopar sab kuch akal ki baat hai..Jo Taleem ho woh upar chad jaatha..jo be-taaleem ho woh tamashaa dekte rehta..GO ka number koi bhi ho..agar aadmee kaa akal ek number ka ho ..tho koun harayegaa???"

(What's this nonsense sir? Whoever be in government. the poor stays in poverty and the rich lives in mansion. Above that everything is related to brain power. Whoever is educated will stride up. Who ever is illiterate, he will look at everything in astonishment. Whatever be the GO number you are saying, if the individual's brain power is No-1, who can defeat him?")

Well, that's the philosophical touch given by Syed.

On a whole the feel of glumness is observed among many who are aware of GO 610.

Will 30 Lakh Chennai Population Watch 'Sivaji'!
It is another statistical analysis. Abirami Ramanathan along with GV films has purchased the Chennai city rights of 'Sivaji'from the producer, AVM, spending the mammoth Rs. 6.50 crore. It is really historical price ever spent only on Chennai rights. How it could be a profitable venture at such huge price when 'Chandramukhi' itself made Rs 3.5 cr business despite the ticket price is higher?

But Abirami gives the reasoning saying, "There are 60 lakh voters in Chennai and plus another 40 lakh children and others. So, out of this 1 cr population even if 30 lakh watch the film it will end up with hugest profits".

Is that connvincing We have to wait and see.

Karunanidhi watches Sivaji
Karunanidhi - CM of Tamilanadu - had a special preview of Rajnikant’s 15 June release Sivaji recently along with his family. This preview was also attended by Rajnikant and his family members. Gossip: Heroine running behind astrologers!
We weren’t the least bit surprised when a little birdie told us that James actress Nisha Kothari has been meeting a host of astrologers and numerologists lately.

Apart from Ramu’s Sholay and Balakrishna's Okka Magadu, the actress doesn’t have any major releases to look forward to. What’s more, her other project with Ramu, titled Go, still hasn’t found any distributors and so Nisha has decided she needs some divine intervention.

“She has started fasting, visiting temples, chanting holy verses and other things. Nisha has also been doing the rounds of various astrologers seeking their guidance,” says the source.

Dahling, maybe you should be praying for some talent instead!

Simbu Saying 'Something New' About Nayantara
Simbu is saying something new about Nayantara's issue. The issue is old and no one is inclined to listen about that now. But again Simbu tries to say something about that. Out of surprise he says that everything is only gossip but he still likes Nayantara.

He says that media disturbed Nayantara by writing much about their affair, otherwise she likes him. Fine, what media had done amidst? It popularized these two and boosted up their remunerations!

Fine, let us keep silent and see if they unite again. Who knows? Nothing can be brought to conclusion in film industry till the grand finale. What's that finale? Either of the two getting married! In other sense, the issue comes to end permanently if Simbu or Nayan gets married to other one. That's it.

Buzz: Karishma Struggling To Rock with Chiru
Karishma Kotak is now struggling along with Mega Star Chiranjeevi in Australia. The reason is that the sources say that she is not being able to cope with the body language of Chiranjeevi while dancing. The problem of her is speed and style. But Prabhu Deva is struggling to compose steps those are in tune with the body language of her.

Karishma Kotak is a model who worked for top notch glamour sessions like 'Kingfisher Calendar' but not well versed with local filmy dances.

Sources say that the songs have come up really well and Devi Sri scored wonderful when compared to that of Shankardada MBBS. We have to wait and see how everything comes out ultimately.

Side Talk: Sivaji fever rises on mobiles
With just two days left for the year’s most awaited release Sivaji: The Boss the excitement surrounding the film is reaching an all-time high. While many of Rajini’s fans are still scrambling around for tickets so that they can get a glimpse of their superstar on screen, others are ensuring that they leave no stone upturned to be a part of the Sivaji fever. The latest rage among fans is to download ringtone, caller tunes and wallpapers of the movie.

“When I heard some of the songs in Sivaji, especially the number Style I really liked it and I thought it would be a good idea to have it as my ringtone so I immediately downloaded it,” says Swetha Sairaj, a media student. Some people have downloaded Sivaji related stuff not because they like a particular song or a movie still but just for the simple fact that it has Rajinikanth. Says 27-year-old Vipin, “I’ve always been a great fan of Rajinikanth and that is why I have a Sivaji ringtone, call back tune and a wallpaper.”

Realising that the demand for these would peak just before the movie releases, mobile service providers are making sure that they release a variety of merchandise related to the movie, but for a price. “Downloading an ordinary ringtone will cost you anywhere upto Rs 10, but with the Sivaji specials the cost goes upto Rs 20 per tone,” adds Swetha.

Meanwhile mobile service providers say that they have not increased the prices on purpose, but the rights of the music itself are high. “It is not that we priced these ring tones higher just to generate revenue, but some costs of acquiring these tones and pictures were more than usual,” informs an employee of Airtel.

Hutch seems to have gone a step further, they have introduced a Sivaji Starter Pack at Rs 99. “We have done this just to add to the Sivaji excitement. When you subscribe to this pack all your charges continue as per the existing tariff but the difference is that you will receive two SMS alerts per day about the movie. The other advantage is also that you might stand a chance to win a ticket for the 100th day show of the movie,” says a Hutch sales executive.

10 Crore Alzheimer Patients By 2050 AD

A fresh discovery says that there will be 10 crore Alzheimer patients in the world by 2050. Alzheimer's is a disease that causes acute loss of memory and ultimately death within a few months or a couple of years. The brain loses sharpness in initial stage and slowly the memory loss hits it. It is generally caused in old age and that is called senile dementia or dotage. But Alzheimer hits the people in young age miserably.

In recent times the celebrities like Ronald Regan were passed away suffering from Alzheimer's. But indeed, he was hit by that disease in old age.

The changing life styles, pressure on brains, weakened quality of food; regular alcoholism among young ones are resulting in loss of memory and brain cell damage. The syndrome is widely observed among Asians and that too Indians in particular. So, it's time for researchers to find new ways to sharpen brains and protect from memory loss.

Krishnam Raju creates flutter at TDP meeting

Former Union Minister U.V. Krishnam Raju created flutter by appearing in the TDP flock during the visit of TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu in West Godavari District on Tuesday.

With a BJP `kandua' around his shoulders, Mr. Raju came on to the dais with folded hands following an invitation and shared it with a galaxy of TDP leaders, keeping the rumour mills at work.

Mr Raju came in a huge convoy of vehicles with the fluttering saffron flags to the village well before the arrival of Mr. Naidu. It may be recalled that Mr. Krishnam Raju got elected to the Lok Sabha from Narsapur in alliance with the TDP and became a Minister in the NDA regime. However, his presence at the event turned out to be an enigma for the TDP cadres in the backdrop of Mr Naidu distancing himself from the `communal' BJP.

Who's a bigger star, Big B or Rajini?

At 58 Rajinikanth is the unchallenged badshah of Tamil cinema, and at 64, Amitabh Bachchan is still considered the shahenshah of Hindi films.

Both Rajinikanth and Amitabh began their careers in the 70s with bit roles and by the 80s they were the reigning demi-gods of the Tamil and Hindi film industry respectively.

Over the years they have co-starred in hits like Andha Kanoon, Geraftaar and Hum and individually they have a fanatic fan following. Consider the hundreds who arrive in Mumbai every year to wish the Big B on his birthday or the kilometre long crowds that line up for hours each time a Rajini film releases.

Cult figures when it comes to popular culture, Amitabh had little luck when it came to winning in the political arena, while Rajini has only shown a guarded interest of being politically ambitious.

But fact is that though, Rajinikanth has been restricted to being a Tamil icon, Amitabh's popularity is pan Indian, thanks to the reach of Hindi films.

“Rajini sir is probably the biggest superstar the country has ever had. The fan following he has is unquestionable. But his ability to speak South Indian languages clearly conveyed to the masses that he is a South Indian (sic). So, it was difficult for him to play North Indian roles,” actor Madhavan said.

But the economics have a different tale to tell. According to sources while Amitabh may charge anything between Rs 3-4 crore per film, Rajinikanth's fee can go over Rs 10 crore including a share of box-office profits.

Amitabh's last solo starrer Cheeni Kum has done above average business having collected over Rs 6 crore at the Indian box-office in two weeks, while Rajini's last release Chandramukhi was a blockbuster with earnings estimated at Rs 60 crore.

Even in terms of fan following, Amitabh’s official fan clubs are restricted at a modest 18 across India but Rajinikanth has over 35,000 fan clubs in Tamil Nadu alone.

And while we have already seen eight Amitabh films in the last one year, Rajinikanth now only does one film every two years maintaining that reclusive exclusivity.

So who's the bigger star? There are no simple answers to that one and their fans may not be the best people to answer the question.
