When Rahman took over New York

A R Rahman turned the Nassau Coliseum in New York into a dance hall on Saturday night with one electrifying number after another.

More than 13,000 spectators jumped to their feet at one time or another during the three and half long concert, which saw many popular singers belting out old and new hits composed by the musical maestro over a decade.

In a program that also had its share of soulful numbers such as Chanchan Chanchan from Water exquisitely rendered in New York by Sukhvinder Singh and Sadhana Sargam, the other adrenaline pumping songs were Chaiyya Chaiyya from the film Dil Se, the title song of Rang De Basanti, and the Hamma Hamma number from Bombay. The last song was sung by Rahman in Tamil.

"I wish he had sung the Hindi version of the song," said a young man. "Even then I just could not resist getting on to my feet."
