After Sivaji, the Next Big Tamil Release is Kireedam

The Sivaji mania has not yet abated in Tamil Nadu but it might well do so by the time Suresh Balaji releases his first film as producer (jointly with Adlabs).

Ajith's Kireedam is the next big release after Sivaji: The Boss. According to Suresh Balaji, the film may hit the screens on July 12, a month after Sivaji reached the theatres.

It was Ajith's desire to follow in the superstar's footsteps. In fact, he's been doing that for almost a month, ever since he started shooting for the new Billa, after taking Rajnikanth's blessings.

Kireedam is based on the landmark Malayalam film of the same name, directed by Sibi Malayil and written by Lohitadas. Though an offbeat subject, the film ran successfully at the box office, and Mohanlal won his first national recognition for his scintillating performance in it.

Equally great were the performances of Thilakan as his father and Kaviyoor Ponnamma as his mother.

Raj Kiran, one of the best character Tamil artistes, will play Thilakan and Saranya, his mother.

Mohanlal's love interest was a school teacher (played by Parvathi, now wife of actor Jayaram), but in the Tamil version, Trisha is a student.

The Tamil version of Kireedam was supposed to release on May 1, Ajith's birthday. The actor has always released his movies on his birthday. But because of the uncertainty regarding the release of Sivaji, the release of Kireedam got delayed.

Ajith needs a hit badly as his last film Aalwar didn't do so well at the box office. We have to wait and see whether Vijay, a one-time assistant of Priyadarshan, would be able to recreate the magic of the Malayalam version.

Interestingly, both of Ajith's upcoming movies are remakes -- so the actor will have to match Mohanlal's mesmerising performance in Kireedam, and Rajnikanth's style in Billa.

'I don't consider myself lucky at all' : Katrina

Her sense of style impressed more than her acting in her last film, Namastey London opposite Akshay Kumar.

But life has been good for pretty model-turned-actress Katrina Kaif. She has acted with some of the big names in Bollywood. And being Salman's Khan's sweetheart doesn't hurt, either.

This Friday, Katrina will feature in Apne, as Bobby Deol's love. The film also stars Dharmendra, Sunny Deol and Shilpa Shetty.

The actress chats with Narendra Singh about Apne and more.

It's been three years since your first release, Boom. Do you think you have grown as an actor?

I can't answer that question so confidently. I am not sure if I have become a good actor. Being a heroine, not all films can be about you. But what has happened is that I seem to get different kind of roles these days.

In Apne, I have handled a family drama for the first time. And in my next film, Partner, I have tried comedy. So yes, I have a variety of roles.

You have worked with directors like Ram Gopal Varma, Vipul Shah and David Dhawan.
Do you consider yourself lucky?

Lucky? (Pauses) No, I don't consider myself lucky at all. I might have been destined to be a Bollywood actor, a film star. But there's no luck involved as far as my work goes. I have worked very, very hard for my films.

I make it a point to do acting workshops and voice trainings before starting a shoot and that has really worked in my favour. My directors, of course, have been helpful and patient.

In fact, Vipul Shah holds a special place for me. I got appreciated for my work in Namastey London. And I owe it to Vipul, who scripted my role so well.

Tell us more about Apne.

Well, Apne is probably the sweetest family film that I have ever acted in. I play a doctor who falls in love with Bobby Deol while treating him for his boxing-related injury.

I have to be honest about this. I wasn't convinced myself whether the internal troubles of one family would actually interest a viewer. But strangely enough, when I watched the film while dubbing, there were scenes where I had tears in my eyes!

The effortless chemistry between Dharamji, Sunny and Bobby is something you have to watch out for.

Since we are on the subject of family, do you miss yours?

Not really. My mother and sister live in Chennai. Theirs is a quiet, non-filmi life and I catch up with them over weekends. As for Mumbai, I have so many friends here -- the entire industry feels like family!
is Salman like family too?

But you did turn painter, didn't you?

(Laughs) That is just a one off thing for a friend! Actually, I wanted to thank Vipul for all that he did for me while shooting for Namastey London. So I tried my hand at an oil painting, which I must say, takes a lot of time. Then I sent it to Vipul to check if he liked it. He loved it, and promised to hang it in his office. So that's the only painting I have done so far! It's not a hobby. And everyone is painting these days, aren't they?

You are always so well turned out. Some say, you look better than Aishwarya Rai!

Better than Ash? Now that has to be a first. I haven't heard that one before. Actually, I work out regularly and watch my diet. And I dress up well always.

I firmly believe that when you have fans and people watching out for you, you better not look frumpy in jeans! Looking nice and dressing smart makes Indian award functions look more international as well.

Tell us about Partner.

Partner is a total laugh riot. It's not slapstick; it's just a very funny film. I am looking forward to it because of Govinda and Salman's fabulous comedy! It's more about them than me.

Do you really think Govinda is a tall actor?

He is tall, yaar. Govinda is taller than a lot of average Bollywood actors! It's just that he doesn't dress up, and is a simple guy. I also think that he is a taller human being than most Bollywood stars. I like him.

Yesterday Prashant and Today Pawan Kalyan

Yesterday Tamil hero Prashant suffered with Grihalakshmi's case and today it's the turn of Pawan Kalyan. But why the celebrity marriage issues go public and turn out to be a nuisance? It is also known that celebrity families try to safeguard their image in public and hardly wish to come before media with recalcitrance to the person who is pestering them. But why things are so mean for them?

Recall the recent past when Dasari Narayana Rao's daughter-in-law also had approached the court of law seeking justice in the matter of property. Then when Dasari was asked to give explanation he simply replied, "I failed as a father and father-in-law'. That's the answer which needs no further query.

Prashanth, the Tamil hero also said that women today are using the advantage given by law and trying to pull as much as they can when terms go wrong with husband or in-laws.

Nagarjuna's first wife issue didn't turn out to be nuisance just because of gentleman settlement. Even now Dr Ramanaidu and Dr ANR meet each other in happy terms. That's the sign of good understanding and maturity. After all, everybody is human being and problems with human relations are common for all. The maturity comes out in the point of settling them.

Coming to Pawan Kalyan-Nandini issue, a leading News Daily mentioned that Nandini filed case as settlement wasn't done till now. It implies that Pawan Kalyan and his family have shown recalcitrance to Nandini's pleas. The result is seen now. Everything has gone public. It's a sign of black mark for Chiranjeevi's family as the girl mentioned 'Griha Himsa' aspects in her complaint. She also said that the influence of Chiranjeevi suppressed her from giving compliant all these days.

Whenever be the issue, the problem that can be solved with 1 stitch has now extended to nine.

Anuskha: 'Just good friends Not Lovers'

Glamour world is buzzing with rumours of link-ups and break-ups. The latest rumour is about Anuskha. According to the grapevine, she is in love with noted cinematographer Senthil Kumar. But when quizzed, the actress just laughed it off. "It is so funny. Everybody is curious to know what's been going on between me and Senthil. While some of them have thrown hints, others have openly asked me. I am just good friends with him. I will happily tell the world when I am in love," she says.

Just 700 Invitees For Lokesh Naidu's Marriage

August 26th will be a gala event in Nara-Nandamuri's family. That's the marriage of Chandrababu's son and Balakrishna's daughter. Chandrababu Naidu has only one son, Lokesh Naidu. But he is not sharing the happiness of his son's wedding with all his party members. He is inviting in very less number. Going by a rough estimate made by both families, not more than 700 invites would be sent out for the marriage, the venue for which would be Hitex at Madhapur. Naidu has left it to his wife, Bhuvaneshwari, to finalise the list of invitees, most of whom are likely to be family members and close friends.

After several rounds of consultations, Naidu is understood to have decided against inviting party men for the marriage as it would virtually convert what is essentially a private affair into a public meeting.

Lokesh is getting married to Brahmani, daughter of actor Balakrishna, brother-in-law of Chandrababu Naidu.

As for the engagement that took place last Sunday, family members said the ring Lokesh had exchanged with Brahmani and the necklace the latter was wearing were indeed pricey, in keeping with the status of the parents.

So, where is Lokesh going for his honeymoon ? Insiders say that he intends to take Brahmani to the US, where he is pursuing his MBA. But, a final decision is yet to be taken.

On the day of engagement, Lokesh, who was understandably nervous, discussed with the guests about his education in US, the lifestyle there and so on.

But, did you notice that Naidu garu and his family members chose a Volvo bus to go to brother-in-law Balakrishna's house, hardly half-a-km away?

Reminded of Abhi-Ash wedding wherein the Big B drove in a Volvo bus to the venue?

Tollywood Dull Until 'Shankaradada Zindabad'

Tollywood appears to be sounding dull till the release of 'Shankaradad Zindabad' or any other big hero's film. Yama Donga also boosts up the graph of dullness, say trade pundits. After the release of Sivaji, there is no big new release in Tollywood. Nagarjuna's 'Don', Venkatesh-Boyapati film, Balakrishna's 'Okka Magadu', Mahesh Babu's 'Athidhi' etc are all in shooting which are yet to release audio as well.

So, will there be no enthusiasm in Tollywood until the release of this biggies?

The new films hitting freshly are 'Chandrahaas', 'Toss' and 'Bahumathi'!

LP cries foul over Lokesh marriage

Those who attended the engagement ceremony of Brahmani, daughter of NTR's son Balakrishna with Lokesh, son of Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday, could find the presence of almost all the family members of former Chief Minister N T Rama Rao.

Except, of course, Nandamuri Lakshmi Parvathi, widow of NTR. Reason is obvious: None of NTR's sons and daughters, sisters and close relatives, acknowledges Lakshmi Parvathi as the legal wife of NTR, though he had actually married her in public. Therefore, it was natural that they don't treat her as their relative and invite to any function held in the family.

So, it was no surprise when Lakshmi Parvathi cried foul over the marriage of Lokesh with Brahmani and described it as a fraud. She said it would definitely have no blessings of NTR. She issued a statement saying Lokesh is fortunate to marry Brahmani, but Brahmani is unlucky to get a husband like Lokesh, because he happens to be the son of Chandrababu Naidu who had betrayed his own father-in-law. Moreover, Lakshmi Parvathi knows every bit about Lokesh, his bad habits and his illegal sexual affairs. She did not reveal them, but only said "the less I talk about that fellow, the better and God only save Brahmani."

Unfortunately for her, nobody is taking Lakshmi Parvathi's comments seriously!

Vandana has right to live in actor’s house

Chennai: City police commissioner Letika Saran said on Tuesday that Ms Vandana Reddy, the girl who claims she is married to actor Srikanth, has every right to live in his house as records show that they were married. Ms Vandana had entered the actor’s house forcefully two weeks ago and is living there while Srikanth’s parents have walked out.

Ms Saran who earlier inspected the display of recovered stolen articles, told reporters that there was nothing wrong in a married woman staying in her husband’s house. Srikanth’s parents had approached the police on Monday asking for help to go back to their house, which they had left when Vandana came to live there. The actor also left the house in Kumaran Nagar near Vadapalani after Vandana barged in. The actor had announced his decision to marry Vandana, a girl from a business family a few weeks ago. However, he officially called it off claiming that his fiancée was from a family with a criminal record. The actor and Vandana are said to have known each other for the last two years. After Vandana produced photographic evidence to support her claim that she was already married, Srikanth admitted that he had married her and approached the court for a divorce.

Behind The Scene: Pavan Kalyan in the dock!

Power star Pavan Kalyan, brother of Mega Star Chiranjeevi, who is undergoing a lean trot in the Tollywood, is caught in yet another controversy. His wife Konidala Nandini has filed a suit against him in the Ist additional chief metropolitan magistrate, Visakhapatnam, charging him with marrying another woman Renu Desai, though the first marriage is still in existence.

Nandini and Pavan Kalyan were married on May 17, 1997, but without giving her any divorce, he married Renu Desai subsequently, which amounts to bigamy. In her affidavit submitted to the court, Nandini accused 11 others, including Renu Desai, Chiranjeevi, his wife Surekha, his parents K Venkat Rao and Anjana Devi, another brother K Naga Babu, his wife Padmaja, sisters Vijaya Durga, Madhavi, Chiranjeevi's brother-in-law Allu Arvind, his wife Nirmala, Pawan Kalyan's another sister K Vasantha and her husband K Venkateswara Rao in her case. She also filed another case for maintenance in the Vizag family court on Tuesday under section 18 of Hindu adoptions and maintenance act seeking Rs 5 lakhs per month as maintenance. The family court judge issued directions to Pavan Kalyan to appear before the magistrate on July 31.

The case has created a sensation in the film circles, as Pavan Kalyan cancelled his shooting midway at Ramanaidu Studios in Hyderabad and went missing. And in Visakhapatnam, Nandini and her family members went underground fearing attack by Pavan Kalyan fans.

Known for his arrogant behaviour, compared to a modest and polite Chiranjeevi, Pavan Kalyan may have to face a serious trial in the court, unless the issue is settled out of court, sources say.
